Obituary

Surrounded by family, Barbara Kay Jueschke, 85, of Leavenworth, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2024.

Barbara was born on Nov. 6, 1938, to Virgil and Lois (Burns) Huston in Lebanon, Missouri. She grew up in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Her interests included dancing and baton twirling. She attended Oklahoma State University, majoring in home economics because fashion was her passion.

While at OSU, she met Charles Jueschke on a blind date, and they wed August 1, 1959. They soon had two children, Chris and Melissa, while living in Durant and then moved to Lawton, Oklahoma. They moved to Warrensburg, Missouri, in 1979. In later years, they lived with Melissa and her family in Shawnee, Kansas. For the past 14 months, Barbara resided at Homestead of Leavenworth.

Barbara took great pride in her family, being a homemaker and being involved in her children's activities. She was committed to nurturing their physical and social growth through a variety of activities such as private speech lessons, style shows, music lessons, sewing lessons and scouting as well as classroom activities. She served as a dedicated (and patient!) Blue Bird and Camp Fire leader for seven years. She used her sewing skills to make many of Melissa's clothes.

Throughout her life, Barbara was involved in her neighborhood and community. She was known for taking homemade custard to friends when they were sick and meals to families experiencing loss. She truly had a heart for service. As a volunteer at the Robert E. Greiner School for the Handicapped of Comanche County in Lawton, she loved assisting teachers in the classrooms, and the students had a very special place in her heart. She received a 1,000-hour pin in appreciation of her service. She also served as an officer of PTA.

Barbara was recognized in the Outstanding Young Women of America and was a 50+ year member of Beta Sigma Phi.

When the family moved to Warrensburg, Missouri, in 1979, she continued her membership in Beta Sigma Phi and joined the Welcome Wagon Club -- and became a Welcome Wagon representative. She also was an active member of Secunda Study Club and the Johnson County Republican Women's Club. She volunteered at the Western Missouri Medical Center gift shop and at a home for victims of domestic abuse. After moving to Shawnee, she joined the Daughters of the American Revolution, Olathe Chapter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Leavenworth, preceded by visitation at 10 a.m. The Rite of Committal will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.

Barbara and Charles were married for 64 years at the time of his passing in August 2023. She also was predeceased by her parents.

She is survived by her son, Chris (Rainie) Jueschke of Covington, Georgia; daughter, Melissa (Michael) Precht of Lansing, Kansas; granddaughter Amber (Jon) Martin of Clinton, Missouri; grandson Nicholas Precht of Kansas City, Missouri; and granddaughter Michaela Precht of Shawnee, Kansas; and great grandsons Tristan and Trevor Martin. She also is survived by her brother, Richard D. Huston (Ardella) of Denver, Colorado, and many much-loved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Catholic Community Hospice in care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home.
