Obituary

Debra Christie Scherer, age 66, of Centerview, passed away Friday, February 16, 2024, at her home.

She was surrounded by family and friends and was ushered to her Lord through the singing of her favorite hymns. She was born September 23, 1957, in Odessa, the daughter of Robert and Christie (Jefferies) Morehead. Debra grew up on the family farm, was very involved in her 4-H chapter, and graduated from Odessa High School in 1975.

On December 5, 1975, Deb married her high school sweetheart Gary Scherer and together they raised three daughters; twins, Cody, and Christie, and Katie. With her serving heart and selfless love, Debra was always preparing meals for anyone in the community in need. Her "official" jobs varied from bank teller to elementary school secretary. She also helped Gary and his brother Dennis on the family farm driving the grain cart during harvest season. Debra and Marilyn were valued members of Scherer Brothers Inc. and spent several double dates taking the boys supper in the field.

Deb was a master gardener, skilled quilter, and an expert in the kitchen. Planning and preparing for family get-togethers were among her favorite things. Later in life, she enjoyed sitting in her parents' porch swing at Scherer Lake watching her family fish and swim.

But her favorite job was being a full-time Ma-Ma to her 7 grandchildren. She did everything from homemade playdough to trips to play in the creek. Deb had a way of making each grandchild feel special and loved. She loved attending her kids and grandkids sporting events. Not only did she cheer for her own, but she celebrated every player as if they were her own.

Deb was an inspiration to all who knew her as she battled cancer with positivity and perseverance the last five years. She reminded us that every day is a gift and she was grateful, thankful, & blessed. Her favorite verse was Joshua 1:9, "Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Deb is survived by her husband, Gary Scherer; her daughters, Katie (Tucker) Woolsey, Christie Slack, and Cody Tarr; her grandchildren, Westin, Colton, Kenna, Valorie, Kalie, Jared, and Jordyn; her mother, Christie Morehead; and her siblings, Linda Cottrill and Larry Morehead. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Morehead.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23 at the Johnson County Cowboy Church. A celebration of life will follow at 7:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Debra Scherer Memorial Scholarship and can be left in care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home
