James "Jim" Crowder, a man of faith, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 15, 2023 with his wife by his side. He was 81.
Jim was born to William (Bill) and Cora (Virginia) Crowder on February 1, 1942 in Independence, Missouri. When he was 4, he was struck with polio and lost the use of his legs. Despite this, Jim worked hard and was on the wrestling team, played baseball, and could run the 50 yard dash in 13 seconds on his crutches, which observers said looked like a helicopter.
Jim was baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a strong faith in the Lord. Throughout his life, he worked as a cab driver and was an amazing chef, even winning awards for his chili and prized plum jelly. For many years, Jim worked with his father in farming with their Crowder Custom Bailing business and took "great pride in his work." Jim loved to hunt and fish with his family.
On October 10, 1992, Jim married the love of his life, Patricia (Sam) and they spent the next 30 years creating a life together. Even in his last years with cancer treatments and heart attacks, Jim would often be found mowing the Leeton fairgrounds or his neighbors' yards. He would cook food and give rides to those in need. Jim was a staple in the community as he made his rounds on his scooter. Despite his ailments, Jim was ever the optimist and always had that smile on his face.
He is survived by his beloved wife Patricia; his sons James Crowder III and Scott Crowder (Smith); his daughter Melody Crowder; 3 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sisters Beverly Crowder (Monseese) and Janice Crowder (Kendall).
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 1 p.m. at the Chilhowee Restoration Branch in Chilhowee, Missouri.
