Obituary

Jerry Wayne Wyre, age 78, passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of Thursday, January 29, 2026 in the place he was born, raised, and loved, Warrensburg, MO.

He was born November 15, 1947, in Warrensburg, the son of G.W. Jr. & Ethel May Wyre. The oldest of 4, he was a natural protector and provider all of his days. In his childhood, his favorite thing to play was Cowboys & Indians at Grandma & Grandpa Thompsons' farm in a special place they called the 'Hideout' with brother, Jimmy. He graduated from Warrensburg High School in 1966 and shortly after, was drafted to the U.S. Army. He served his country spending time in Korea, followed up with 25 years in the Missouri Army National Guard. He traveled the country, helping people move with long time pal, the late Wayne Dillingham. Upon retirement from the military, he worked for MoDot and then the Johnson County Highway Department for over 15 years.

A stoic man, with great hair, and a meticulously well maintained yard, he was a man of routine and few words. He thought if you weren't 10 minutes early, you were late. He worked hard until retirement, starting his days with black coffee and his afternoons at the Checker Tavern. He raised 3 children, AnJanell, Annette, and Roger and was very active in the lives of his grandchildren. On September 16, 1988, he and the classy and lovely, Lunexa Ann McKeehan of Knob Noster, MO were united in marriage. She preceded him in death on December 15, 2008. Spending weekends at their Lake House, many good memories were made on the pontoon boat, catching fish for his granddaughter, Kelsey Jo, and late nights on the porch gathered around the table, drinking beer with family and friends. He is remembered as a wonderful Papaw, who was especially proud of 'His girls.' He was known for entertaining. His baby sister recalls a time when you could not buy beer on Sunday's but Jerry always had 'Sunday beer' stocked in his fridge, which he continued to do throughout his life. He was always surrounded with family and friends, hosting many parties from frying turkey on Thanksgiving to patio parties with a live band and stocked bar. He thoroughly enjoyed a well deserved retirement, where he rarely missed a Happy Hour at the Hideaway. He loved to dance, visit, and play Shuffleboard on the weekends. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge, Eagles Club, and VFW. He acquired several friends and acquaintances throughout his years and was treasured by many.

Jerry is survived by his children, AnJanell Parsons, (Warrensburg), Annette Wyre, and Roger (Jamie) Wyre (Kansas); his grandchildren, Kelsey Jo Parsons (Warrensburg), Hunter Parsons (Brooke) (North Carolina), Breyer Parsons (Madison) (Warrensburg), Megan Shea, Morgan Shea, Brandon Shea, and Jonathan Wyre (all of Kansas); great grandchildren, Tannyn, (Leeton) Kooper, Kambrie, Westen, and Remington (KS); sister, Carla Good (Howard); brother, Jimmy Wyre; and sister-in-law, Lorrane Coulter (all of Warrensburg). He was preceded in death by his wife, Lunexa; his parents, G.W. Jr, and Ethel Wyre; sister, Vicki Hunt; brother-in-law, Melvin Coulter; and son-in-law, Chad Parsons.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Sweneey-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home with Bryan & Beth Hunt officiating.
