Obituary

John Philip Sloan, age 80, of Warrensburg, passed away Friday, February 10, 2023 peacefully at home.

He was born the middle of five children to Irish immigrants Thomas and Mary Ellen Sloan née Shannon on June 2, 1942 in New York City. He graduated from St. Leonard's High School, Brooklyn, New York, in 1960, after which he studied electronics. He married Patricia Kiernan, also of NYC, in April of 1964.

A few years into their marriage, John and Pat made the brave decision to leave New York and move to California. They then spent almost 50 years living in Silicon Valley, predominantly in San Jose. The last 5 years of his life, John lived in Warrensburg, Missouri, near his daughter Theresa. He thoroughly enjoyed exploring the sights of his new state with Theresa and her family.

John spent most of his career working for Varian Associates in Palo Alto, Ca, where he formed and fostered many of the great friendships of his life. John's hobbies included photography, studying history, following commodities and the stock market, playing craps, and exploring the beauty and nature of Northern California and Nevada. He was well known for his tours of Northern California that he would enthusiastically lead with any friends and family that visited.

Above all, John was a man who treasured and loved his family. He always led his daughters and grandkids by example, showing them that family came first.

John is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daughters, Theresa (Ryan) Buehler, Colleen (John) Nogrady, and Laura (Jim Janssen) Sloan; his grandchildren, Nolan, Sean, William, Matthew, Maeve, Aideen, Ty, and Johnny; and his siblings, Tommy Sloan, Danny Sloan, Brian Sloan, and Rosemary (Joe) McNally.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Sunset Hill Cemetery with Brother Charles Brant officiating.
