Lena
Sproat
Feb 16, 1937 — Jun 29, 2026
Lena Morehead Sproat passed peacefully on June 29, 2026, at home with her family and beloved dog Little Joe at her side.
Born in Odessa, Missouri on February 16, 1937. The story told is that the doctor who delivered her said "She looks like a Lena" and that was that.
Odessa, Missouri is where Lena went to school and started in banking. She met Jim Sproat on a double date with her sister Martha and Wayne Dillingham. Jim and Lena were married May 25, 1961
She moved to Warrensburg, Missouri where they raised their family. Lena continued her bank career starting at Citizens Bank and staying through many names changes and retiring with US Bank after 40 years of service.
Lena was a phenomenal cook; her fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy were often requested for birthday dinners at her house. Holiday, family and birthdays always meant a feast of your favorites at her house. Her secret ingredient for just about everything thing was "just a little sugar" and always "double the cheese".
Lena was a devoted and faithful watcher of "The Young and the Restless" since it started. She would watch on her lunch break at the bank, record on her VCR and eventually even on DRV so she wouldn't miss a thing. Even on trips and vacations she always found a way to watch.
Casinos were a place Lena loved to go and shovel money into the slot machines. All you had to do was just say the word casino and she was getting her purse, putting on lipstick and ready to go. All grandchildren got a trip to the casino with her when they turned 21.
Trips with her sisters would always bring a smile to her face. They would go to Branson regularly to see the music shows, riverboat cruises and even Las Vegas which was her very first plane ride.
Quilting became a big part of Lena's life. She loved to go in search of fabric stores, quilt shops and quilt conventions. Her hunt for the perfect fabric took her near and far in Missouri and Iowa. Even into Winterset, Iowa the birth place of John Wayne, but they have quilt shops. In all her travels and adventures she gathered enough project packs, patterns and fabric to cover the state of Missouri.
Above all Lena's grandchildren were her greatest joy. She loved spending time with them. She traveled to sporting events, taught them to cook and bake, farm pond fishing skills, even a trip to Disney World with all the grandchildren.
Lena was preceded in death by her parents Elvis "Dutch" and Sadie Ripley Morehead; her husband Jim Sproat: Brother Lloyd Morehead; Sisters Helen Shackelford and Martha Dillingham.
She is survived by her sons Roger (Babette) Sproat Warrensburg, MO, Robert (Debbie) Sproat Amana, Iowa; her cherished and spoiled grandchildren Kori (Dustin) Christiansen, Amanda Sproat, Jake ( Samantha) Sproat, Martin Sproat; treasured great-grandchildren Jase Christiansen, Cooper Christiansen and Brooks Sproat.
