Obituary

Mary Catherine, age 89 years, went to meet her Lord and Savior on January 22, 2026 at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center in Sedalia.

She was born on May 21, 1936 to Mary Rachel (Mullins) and Harry Parker Charles in Sweet Springs, Missouri. She was a graduate of Houstonia High School.

She married August W. Opfer, November 1, 1954. This union was blessed with five children. Charles Michael Opfer (died in infancy), Vanesa Lynn Chappell (Larry) of Sedalia; Michael Dee Opfer of La Monte; Bryan Neale Opfer (deceased) and Joy Gaylene Elliott (Robin) of La Monte. She married Glenn Sammons in April 1997.

She is also survived by eleven grandchildren; Christina Marie Opfer, Rebecca Lynn Opfer, Bryan Michael Opfer, Joshua Lee Opfer, Brandon Michael Opfer, Robin Elliott Jr., Jamie Elliott, Carrisa Johnson, Tina Nelson, Erica Elliott, Nellie Elizabeth Elliott. Nineteen great-grandchildren; Ricardo Adrian Garcia, Bethany Marie Opfer, Kayden Michael Opfer, Weston Stewart Dale Griffin, Xzavier Ezekiel Garcia, Ezra Mateo Garcia and Liam Kai Griffin; Robby Scroggins, Gabby Elliott, Stetson Brandon, Alexis Brandon, Collin Johnson, Gary Allen Johnson, Cody Elliott, Shanoya Nelson, Justine Nelson, Krystin Nelson, Gavin Elliott, Olivia Elliott and 3 great great grandchildren and two more on the way and her sister Wilma Jean McFail of Houstonia.

Besides her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by two sons; Charles Michael and Bryan Neale and two brothers; Forrest D. Charles and Raymond F. Charles

She loved playing the piano and puttering around in the yard planting her flowers. Her greatest pride and joy was her children and grandchildren. One thing she did when she was in her late 60's was to roll down a little hill in a refrigerator box to show her grandsons how to do it and then couldn't believe she was sore the next day. We gave her the nickname 'Crazy Grandma' since you never knew what she might do next. She was a member of County Line Baptist Church, rural La Monte and served in many roles; piano player, Sunday School and VBS teacher, and church clerk.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 27, 2026 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the Moore Funeral home, La Monte, MO.
