Obituary

Otis Lynn Dempsey, age 71, of Warrensburg, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City.

Born on March 26, 1955, in Clinton, Missouri, Otis was the son of Ferrell and Rose Irene (Keltner) Dempsey. He lived a life defined by hard work, unwavering devotion to his family, and a heart that was much bigger than he would ever admit.

On May 9, 1988, Otis began his career with EnerSys, where he dedicated 35 years of loyal service before retiring. He took great pride in his work and believed in providing for those he loved. No matter the circumstances, he always made sure his family never went without.

Otis was known for being ornery and quick with a joke, but beneath that tough exterior was a generous, caring man who loved deeply. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family, especially spoiling his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a lifelong love for Ford vehicles, enjoyed listening to music, and cherished the companionship of his faithful dog and best friend, General Lee.

He is survived by his son, Matthew Dempsey; daughter, Tonja VanOster; son, Adam Hackworth; daughter-in-law, Angela Dempsey; grandchildren, Tesla Dempsey, Taya Dempsey, and Chloe Hackworth; great-grandchildren, Avri Lynn, Nova Jean, and Kuper Dean; siblings, Doug Dempsey, Dorothy (Rodney) Street, and Judy Stephens; and his beloved dog, General Lee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferrell and Rose Dempsey, and five siblings: Harvey Dempsey, Curtis Dempsey, Dennis Dempsey, Claude Dempsey, and Carol Homfeld.

Otis leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, laughter, and unwavering dedication to his family. He was loved by so many, and the memories he created with those who knew him will be treasured forever. Though he will be deeply missed, his love, strength, and the lessons he taught will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

A gathering honoring Otis' life will be held on Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Sweeney- Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg, Missouri.
