Ronald
Luker
Apr 17, 1943 — Apr 20, 2024
Warrensburg
Ronald (Rohn) I. Luker passed away on April 20, 2024 in Lee's Summit, MO, from complications from Parkinson's disease. He was a much-loved husband, father, Papa, brother, son, teacher and friend.
Rohn was born in Mason City, IA, the eldest of Gilbert and Lydia Luker's four children. He grew up on his family's farm outside of Clear Lake, IA. Rohn and his childhood sweetheart, Georgia Szymeczek, were married on May 7, 1966.
He served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War, being stationed in Texas, Florida and ultimately Okinawa, Japan. While he was stationed in Japan, Rohn and Georgia's daughter, Wendy, was born and his lifelong interest in Japanese culture and arts was sparked. It was there that he learned how to create batik art, which would come to play a role in his future artistic creations. Rohn was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1971 with the rank of Staff Sargeant and the family moved back to Mason City, IA, where Rohn and Georgia's son, Daren was born in 1973.
Rohn earned two Master's degrees (art education and counseling) from the University of Northern Iowa. He taught in the Mason City public schools for over 30 years, in addition to teaching courses at North Iowa Area Community College. "Mr. Luker" was a beloved educator by the hundreds of students he taught through the years. His big heart made his classroom known as a welcoming space for all students. Additionally, he designed and built sets for plays and musicals at Mason City High School and Stebens Children's Theatre.
Rohn was a "Renaissance man". As an artist, he created, sold and won awards for his batiks, jewelry and photography. He also enjoyed woodworking, classic cars (especially Corvairs), coaching Daren's youth ice hockey teams, fishing, and was a long-time fan of the Greenbay Packers and Iowa Hawkeyes. He also loved music and singing as a tenor in his church choir at Bethlehem Lutheran Church (Mason City, IA) and The River City Barbershop chorus, as well as the award-winning barbershop quartet, River City Delegation.
In his retirement, Rohn enjoyed volunteering locally and traveling across the US and around the world with Georgia. He was also a member of the Lion's Club. Rohn and Georgia moved to Warrensburg, MO in 2017 to be closer to their grandchildren.
Rohn is survived by his wife, Georgia; daughter Wendy (Frank), Yonkers, NY; son Daren (Miya), Warrensburg, MO; three granddaughters: Hailey, El Paso, TX, Lia and Ava, Warrensburg, MO; sisters Jayne Cambronne and Katherine (Jim) Bart. He is predeceased by his parents and a sister, Marian Edelen.
Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Warrensburg, MO. The family will receive visitors at the church from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 3, 2024 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City, IA. Graveside services will follow at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.
Donations in his honor may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Warrensburg, MO or the Parkinson Voice Project and can be left in care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home.
