Obituary

Sue R. Crouch, 98, passed away January 14, 2025, in Warrensburg, Missouri.

Sue was born January 21, 1926, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Kenneth N. and Catherine (Walker) Robinson. Shortly after her birth, Sue and her family moved to Warrensburg, which was her father's home town. Except for brief periods elsewhere, Sue then resided in Warrensburg her entire life.

After graduating from Warrensburg High School, Sue attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, where she earned an Associate's degree in 1945. She then returned to Warrensburg and attended Central Missouri State College, now the University of Central Missouri. While a CMSC student, Sue was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma social sorority. Sue completed her college education at Missouri University, graduating in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree.

Sue met her future husband, Garrett R. Crouch, on a blind date in Columbia. They were married August 29, 1948, at the First Presbyterian Church in Warrensburg. They lived in Columbia, Missouri, while Garrett finished law school at Missouri University. After his graduation in 1949, they returned to Warrensburg. Garrett began his law practice, and Sue worked in the College Store, which was her family's business.

Sue became a stay-at-home mother when their first child was born. She maintained that role until their two sons were older. Then, Sue began her career in public education, first as a substitute teacher, and then as a 7th grade social studies teacher in the Warrensburg R-VI School District. She made lifelong friendships with other teachers. Her passion for education and concern for students continued even after she retired, and she became a Founding 50 member of the Warrensburg R-VI Schools Foundation.

As their children grew older, Sue and Garrett became world travelers. Over the years, they visited England and the British Isles, China, and most of the European continent, sometimes traveling with groups and other times on their own. Experiences from those trips often added to Sue's 7th grade social studies lessons. For many years after Garrett passed away in 1999, Sue continued traveling with friends, although her journeys were closer to home.

Sue and Garrett were supporters of the University of Central Missouri, particularly the Jennies volleyball and softball programs, for which they endowed scholarships to benefit student-athletes. They also formed lasting friendships with coaches and players, and in 2010, they were recognized with induction into the UCM Athletic Hall of Fame.

In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Garrett, and her son, Jeffrey W. Crouch. She is survived by her son, Garrett R. (Robin) Crouch II, and spouse, Jan S. Crouch, of Warrensburg, and her grandson, Andrew T. (Drew) Crouch, of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Burial will be private under the direction of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Warrensburg R-VI Schools Foundation in care of the funeral home.
