Obituary

Virginia Elizabeth (Griffith) Maxson passed away Nov 17th, 2024 just days after her 99th birthday.

Born in Emporia Kansas on November 11, 1925, Virginia was the daughter of the late Fred Griffith and Esther (Carlson) Griffith. She grew up in Emporia KS, attending Roosevelt High School and Emporia State Teachers College where she was a member of the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority and graduating with a degree in nursing. Virginia met her future husband, Dr. T. Reed Maxson at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO. They married September 7th, 1947 and settled in Warrensburg where Dr. Maxson practiced until the late 1990s and where Virginia lived until her death.

Virginia and Reed adopted three children, Melany, Tristan and Marla Beth. For many years Virginia was an active member of the Warrensburg United Methodist Church where she served in many leadership capacities. She was always an active community member serving in the Red Cross and many other civic and social groups. She helped found the UCM chapter of the Alpha Sigma Tau social sorority. It was Virginia's joy to be a member of the Chapter HW of the PEO sisterhood. She also served as PEO state president in 1972.

Virginia was a devout Christian and a woman who would speak her mind on any subject. She enjoyed socializing and played in numerous bridge groups well into her 90s. She had many long-term friendships in the community. Virginia was also an avid traveler, visiting all states of the Union over her lifetime. She and Reed also traveled to many foreign countries during their 52-year marriage. After Reed's death, Virginia continued to travel with her daughter, Marla.

Preceding Virginia in death were her parents, Fred and Esther Griffith, her sister Dr. Ruth Griffith, her husband Dr. T. Reed Maxson, her mother-in-law, Hazel Maxson, her son, Tristan Maxson, her daughter, Marla Maxson and her son in law, Jeff Ikerd.

She is survived by her daughter, Melany Laws (Harry), daughter-in-law Raphael Maxson, her grandchildren Casey Ikerd, Rob Rogers, Erin Neff (Dave), Lane Rogers and Tad Laws (Alex). She is further survived by 8 great grandchildren: Zachary and Emily Ikerd, Pippa, Gavin and Georgiana Neff, Theo, Maxson and Cooper Laws. Virginia is also survived by her longtime caregiver, Julie Getz whom Virginia loved as a daughter.
