Obituary

We are saddened that Bill (Joe) Sherwood passed away after a courageous battle with leukemia. Bill was born July 7, 1939, to Paul Sherwood and Harriet (Bowyer) Sherwood in White Sulfur Springs, WV. He spent his early childhood there with his grandmother and beloved Aunt Annie Corron until his mother moved to Babylon NY on Long Island where he spent his teenage years.

Bill entered the military in 1957 where he spent almost 23 years until his retirement, then was called back into Civil Service for another twenty years. He was a military man at heart and served as a fire fighter. He took great pride in every job he performed. While in the air force he spent time in France, Germany, Tyndall AFB, Philippines, Montana, England, Italy, Viet Nam and Whiteman AFB and then moved back to Germany and then Whiteman AFB again.

While in Germany he met his wife Ursula and were married May 30, 1961. Together they had a son, William Paul Sherwood. Bill and his family traveled all over Europe. Bill was an avid Nascar fan, loved fishing and took great pride in building his own home with the help of Ursula. Nothing pleased bill more than mowing his lawn. It would always look just perfect. Bill was also very knowledgeable about Auto Mechanics and could fix anything.

Bill was preceded in death by his father Paul Sherwood and wife Alice. His mother Harriett Wauzer and stepfather Bill Wauzer and many uncles and Aunts.

Bill is survived by his wife Ursula, Son William Paul and Daughter-in-law Chrystal, brother Robert Wauzer and wife Leslie of North Carolina, his sister Debra Wauzer of White Sulfur Springs, WV. Lots of nieces and nephews and in-laws in Germany.

Per Bill's wishes he will be cremated without any services and will have his ashes scattered in his Mountain State of West Virginia.

In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and left in the care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home.
